One would think that in order to handle the accounts for one of Asia’s richest civic body, it would require several Chartered Accountants (CAs). However, it has come to light that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed only one.
This information has come in the public domain through an RTI. BMC’s annual budget for this year is almost ₹27,000 crore and it poses a serious question regarding the handling of the civic body’s accounts.

Mumbai RTI activist Anil Galgali filed an RTI to seek information regarding the number of CAs working in BMC’s Auditor department. While responding to the RTI, BMC’s administration Deputy Head informed that there is only one CA in the whole Auditor department whose name is Mahendra Kumar Bhagwan Singh Rajput.
BMC’s annual budget is more than some of the state in India. Speaking about the same, Galgali said that only one CA for handling BMC’s account is a matter of concern. “If there are sufficient CAs appointed, the corruption in BMC can be exposed,” Galgali added.
