According to recently reported incidents, several snakes have been found across residential areas in Mumbai, over the last few weeks. Residents from Dadar living near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ground (Shivaji Park) have complained about spotting a snake which has caused a sense of panic among the visitors and the localities. It is said that the snake was spotted near Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

The ground is visited by many children, fitness enthusiasts and senior citizens who play sports, run, or even come to the park for evening walks. But these incidents of snakes in the park has raised worries for the visitors who have complained that this snake could be dangerous for the people.

Meanwhile, Mumbai experienced a good monsoon this year, and as a result, the grass in the park has grown, eventually becoming a hub for snakes to hide in the burrow.

Besides this, a few days back, residents spotted another non-venomous snake in Mahim area. Upon identifying the threat, officials were informed who rushed to the spot and caught the same. Later, it was found that the snake was a cobra and had entered the bushes. The locals had informed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials about the growing number of snakes in the area, however, the team could not find the snake leaving the residents worried.

Locals have also approached MNS leader Nitin Sardesai who then took the initiative of helping them by asking officials to find the snake around the vicinity with the help of other workers. Talking about the same, Sardesai said, "Three rat snakes have been found at the ground within 24 hours and in totality, six snakes have been found in the last 10 days. Keeping the threat in mind, we have cut the grass which had grown during the monsoon, and will continue our search and rescue operation with young locals.”

Environmental activist and resident of Shivaji Park Jay Shringarpure while speaking to Mumbai Live said, “I have grown up here but I have never spotted snakes in Shivaji Park before this. These could have come from the Indu Mill area, where the construction work of Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial is being carried out.”

Another resident of Shivaji Park Ishan Chavan agreed with Jay Shringarpure's observation as he said, ”Indu Mill had many trees and dense vegetation. Earlier, it was also home to many animals and was known to be a breeding ground for snakes. However, with the ongoing construction work at the place, the snakes might have escaped and shifted base. It has now become extremely risky as children usually come to play at Shivaji Park now.”

The snakes which have been spotted in the park and caught, have been released either in Aarey Colony or dense areas near Powai. The residents hope that the situation will change soon and they will get to celebrate Diwali at the Shivaji Park without any fear.
