Energy Minister Dr Nitin Raut, in a recent decision, announced that the department, this year, will give Diwali bonus to over lakh employees of MSEDCL, Mahatrans company and Mahanirmithi. The approval was given by him in principle and said that the bonus has finally been announced to the employees of the energy department. With the announcement, the power workers avoided a possible strike on Diwali. Moreover, it was announced that the bonus expected to be received last year will also be paid this year.

Officers and employees will be given Rs 15,000, while electrical assistants and sub-station assistants will be given Rs 9,000.  Minister Raut took to Twitter to inform the same and said that the power department has played a major role in providing power during the lockdown, in repairing the power distribution system destroyed in the cyclone, and in restoring power supply to Mumbai. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Energy has announced a Diwali bonus for the officers and employees of the companies.

The trade unions, led by MSEDCL, Mahatransc company and Mahanirmiti, had warned of a strike had the bonus was not approved. The unions had demanded that the Diwali bonuses should be offered as the employees have been working tirelessly during the Coronavirus crisis, regardless of the government's financial position. In the financial year 2019-20, the three companies have generated combined revenue of INR 82,000 crore.

Moreover, Mahatrans company has made a profit of INR 130 crore, while MSEDCL has made a profit of INR 15 crore. Adding more, the union said that the employees will not accept that the government does not have INR 120 crore to pay bonuses to 1 lakh employees. Sharing his thought, Energy Minister Nitin Raut has agreed to the workers' demand by giving the bonus without further delay and avoiding the possible strike.
