Until now, orphans in Maharashtra found it difficult to land a job but now it will be easy for them as the state’s chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a 1 per cent seat reservation for the same.

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting where Women and Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde announced the same. Therefore, the new column known as 'orphan' will be added to the list of existing columns of project affected, earthquake-affected, census worker, contractor, part-time, and election staff.

The state government took a decision after a realisation that orphan candidates have to apply in an open category for completing education and for jobs because they don't have any specific category. This also keeps them away from government jobs and scholarships as well. After the state government received requests to open an independent category for orphans, the former did so.

The state government took various meetings to decide about orphans’ issue. After a series of meetings and discussions, we came to a conclusion that any orphan should not miss out on an opportunity only because he/she is an orphan and so we took the decision.”
