The Maharashtra government has announced plans to establish Economic Development Corporations for journalists and newspaper vendors, aiming to provide financial support and address employment challenges in the newspaper industry. The initiative is expected to be finalised before the next legislative session.

Transport Minister Ashish Shelar stated that the cabinet had approved the proposal in October 2024, and officials are now coordinating with relevant departments to set up the corporations. A comprehensive meeting with journalist organisations, government representatives, and elected officials will soon be held to discuss key issues and solutions.

The initiative seeks to support journalists and newspaper vendors who faced hardships during and after the COVID‑19 pandemic, including job losses and delays in welfare schemes like the Balshastri Jambhekar pension plan. It may also provide assistance for housing, education, and tax benefits for readers purchasing newspapers.

Deputy Chairman Neelam Gorhe emphasised the need for a permanent mechanism to verify eligibility and ensure veteran journalists who face technical or certification challenges can access welfare benefits without difficulty.
