Chinese manja or Chinese string or nylon or plastic artificial manja made of plastic or synthetic material used for flying kites is dangerous for humans as well as birds. Therefore, the use of this manja has been banned in the Thane municipal area. Accordingly, a total of 450 establishments were inspected in all ward committee areas in the municipal area. They did not find Chinese Manja. However, around 290 kg of single use plastic was seized during this inspection. Also, a fine of INR 13 lakh was imposed.

Only cotton thread without sharp metal or glass elements or sticky material as well as thread strengthening agent is allowed for flying kites.

Finely ground glass, metal or other sharp materials are used to make this thread, known as Chinese Manja. The National Green Tribunal has placed restrictions on the manufacture, sale, storage and use of such yarn. As this thread does not decompose biologically, the faecal system, drainage is affected. Also animals are also harmed by eating such foods. Also, since this thread is a conductor of electricity, there is a possibility of power supply interruption due to load on electrical equipment and power substation.
