The 'Rabies-free Thane' campaign is being implemented in the Thane Municipal area in association with Thane Municipal Corporation and Mission Rabies India. This campaign will be used to prevent human deaths by preventing rabies infection and to break the cycle of rabies virus transmission. In this campaign, a target of rabies vaccination of ten thousand stray dogs has been set between January 29 to February 4. Last year more than seven thousand dogs were vaccinated against rabies.

In this initiative, Thane CPCA, Indian Society for Veterinary Animal Protection, Citizens for Animal Protection, VTEAMS and PAW Asia will be supported. The bites of stray dogs lead to rabies infection and death of the concerned person.

Various activities are being implemented by the state government to reduce such death rates to zero by 2030. Under this initiative, a special campaign is conducted to vaccinate stray dogs against rabies. Last year, the TMC gave a rabies vaccine to 7,409 stray dogs. This campaign will be implemented by the municipality this year as well.

25 squads for vaccination

A target has been set to vaccinate 10,000 dogs in the Thane municipal area this year. A total of 25 teams have been formed for vaccination. One doctor and three staff members have been appointed in each team. Animal Medical Officer Dr. Kshama Shirodkar informed that the information about the areas where the rate of bites from stray dogs is high has been collected from the citizens of the city as well as animal friends and based on that, division wise vaccination campaigns have been planned.
