Mumbai's traditional markets are about to get a major facelift. The city's municipal vegetable and fish markets are set to get a makeover as a part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s market remodelling project. The goal will be to bring order and discipline to these marketplaces.

The remodelling project will separate goods and introduce air-conditioned, enclosed areas for fish and meat to avoid smells. Tenders will be invited in about 15 days, and four distinct consultants will be named for the project.

The first phase of the redesign will focus on four municipal markets: Lower Parel's Khamkar Market, Dadar's Swatantra Veer Savarkar Market, Prabhadevi's Waghdhare Market, and Mahim's Gopinath Tank Market, also known as Citylight Market.

Citylight Market had been handed over to a builder for reconstruction. However, due to FSI restrictions and the market's reservation for a homeless shelter, the reconstruction plan was shelved. Citylight Market's classic style and its Mangalore-tiled roof will also serve as models for the other markets.

The redesign will include organised vendor seating and section-wise demarcation for groceries, accessories, veggies, and masalas. Vendors of fish, mutton, and chicken will be housed in a covered area with air conditioning.

For the Koli women, a ladies' lavatory will be built. The BMC will also have name boards at their shops with the names of all other vendors. Vendors will be arranged in a uniform, symmetrical queue, similar to Crawford Market.

In the meantime, the BMC will address the increasing requests from customers to clean up the markets. The funding for the project will be shared equally between the BMC and the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC). However, vendors are eager to rebuild rather than redesign. They have already informed local authorities of this preference.
