Authorities have announced that the wholesale market within Vashi APMC will be opened starting tomorrow, the 15th of April. However, this will be accessible only to the wholesalers while retailers will not be allowed to enter.

Further, wholesalers will be required to wear a mask before entering the market. If they don’t adhere to the norms, they can be fined up to Rs 1,000, it is said. The authorities added that wholesalers will be required to carry an identity card issued by Vashi Police Station while vehicles will be sanitized upon entering the market.

Anil Chavan, Secretary of APMC said - “There will be restrictions, including allowing only 100 vehicles at the onion and potato market and 300 vehicles at the vegetable market from 12 am to 8 am every day.”

Additionally, the authorities have mentioned that people maintain a distance of at least 1 metre while loading and unloading the products. Wholesalers will be required to buy at least 250 Kg of onion, potatoes, and 100 bunches or 10 Kg of mixed vegetables.

It’s no secret that some people were seen to be ignoring social distancing measures across the city. However, administrators have taken a wise step to make sure only wholesalers are allowed to enter the premises of Vashi APMC. This, along with hefty penalties should encourage people to cooperate with the authorities until the spread of the coronavirus pandemic is stopped.

Recently, the BMC assigned Worli-Koliwada as a containment zone which severely restricts the movement of people within the region. While Maharasthra CM Uddhav Thackeray suggested that the lockdown will continue until the 30th of April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today that the lockdown will be extended until the 3rd of May, marking a total of 40 days since the first lockdown was announced.
