The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday, June 17, gave approval to develop the first phase of the ambitious Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor.
Out of the total length of 126.06 km of Virar to Alibaug Multipurpose Transport Corridor Project, the first phase of 96.410 km length between Navghar in Palghar district and Balavali in Pen taluka will be developed on Build, Operate and Transfer basis.
This corridor will connect JNPT to the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
The project aims to cut the travel time between Virar and Alibaug into halve that is 1.5 to 2 hours.
Along with this, it will connect several key expressways Mumbai Ahmedabad National Highway No. 48, Mumbai Agra National Highway No. 848, Kalyan-Murbad-Nirmal National Highway No. 61, Taloja Bypass Mumbai Vadodara Expressway, Mumbai Pune Expressway, Mumbai Bangalore National Highway, Panvel Uran National Highway and Mumbai Goa National Highway.
This route is proposed to pass through Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambarnath, Panvel, Uran, Pen and Alibaug taluka. Approval was given to start the land acquisition process for this route immediately and a total provision of INR 37,013 crore was made including INR 22,250 crore for land acquisition and INR 14,763 crore for interest on it.
It is expected to decongest Mumbai and boost economic growth in the surrounding areas.
