On Sunday, June 5, Maharashtra environment and tourism minister, Aaditya Thackeray reportedly remarked that the state could be witnessing the fourth wave of COVID-19. At the same time, however, he urged people to not panic.
According to accounts, he was interacting with reporters during which he elaborated on how deaths related to coronavirus are not rising in Maharashtra.
Thackeray was quoted in a report by the news agency ANI elucidating that they are telling everyone to wear masks when going outside. He added that at the same time they haven't made wearing masks compulsory yet but will soon do so. In addition to this, he urged the people to attain their booster vaccine doses on time.
Similarly, the state health minister, Rajesh Tope on Monday, June 6 clarified the state government's stance on the mask mandate. Following a meeting with the state COVID task force, Tope voiced that the cabinet has not taken a decision to make the use of masks compulsory.
He was quoted in accounts remarking that the Maharashtra cabinet has urged citizens to wear masks even if it is not compulsory yet. He uttered that while no fine will be imposed for not wearing masks, people are requested to make use of masks to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Moreover, recently, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote to the health secretaries of five states including Maharashtra over increasing number of COVID-19 cases. He mentioned that a strict watch and pre-emptive action be taken if needed to manage any emerging spread of infection. The letter also asked the states to monitor localised spread of infection.
