While Mumbaikars started experiencing chilly days over the weekend, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast light rain and thundershowers on December 12-13 along with an overcast sky in Mumbai and the neighbouring cities.

Moreover, on Monday, December 12, Mumbai woke up to another cool day, with the minimum temperature recorded at 18 degrees at IMD’s Santacruz observatory, which was a degree below normal. The temperature in Colaba was recorded at 21 degrees.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that Mumbai’s regional met centre at Santacruz recorded its lowest minimum temperature for this year’s winter at 16.5°C on Saturday, December 10.

Owing to this, on certain days, Mumbai’s pollution levels were worse than Delhi’s. Though, according to the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research, the city's overall air quality index (AQI) on Sunday, December 10, was 245, which was better than last week when it had above the 300 threshold while being in a bad category (SAFAR).

This year’s winter in Mumbai has been the most polluted in the past four years and the city had no “good” or “satisfactory” air quality days in the last 30 days, according to data from India’s System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (Safar).

In line with this indication, the IMD’s regional met centre in Mumbai has predicted thunderstorms and lightning over Coastal Maharashtra, Madhya Maharashtra, and Vidarbha from Sunday to Tuesday (December 11-13) and Marathwada on Sunday and Monday (December 11-12).

Besides, it has come to light that parts of the Pune district received very light rain on Sunday evening, December 11.

Thereafter, the weather department has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Satara, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Kolhapur districts for the coming two days, with a warning of thunderstorms.

However, the remnants development of cyclone Mandous will determine the path of this forecast.
