Mumbai division of Western Railway (WR) has collected a fine of INR 1.22 crore as fine from ticketless commuters of air-conditioned (AC) local travellers in six months between January and June this year.

As per the data at WR office, a total of 1.67 crore passengers travelled with valid tickets in AC local trains in the same period.

Meanwhile, the railways organised several intensive ticket checking drives from April to June this year, thereby recovering an amount to the tune of INR 50.83 crore (both long distance trains and local trains, etc). Of this, INR 13.26 crore fine was collected from both AC and non-AC Mumbai Suburban section.

To prevent unauthorized entry in AC local trains, frequent surprise ticket checking drives are carried out. As a result of these drives more than 19,600 unauthorized passengers have been penalized during the period April to June 2023 and INR 65.23 lakhs collected in fines, which is over 179% higher than the same period of last year.

The AC local trains run on the western suburban line between Churchgate and Virar. Western Railway appeals to the general public to travel with proper and valid tickets.
