Western Railway (WR)’s Security department is continuously striving to facilitate enhanced security and convenience for its passengers. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) also plays a vital role to ensure the security and safety of their luggage and belongings.

For this, the RPF has taken a novel initiative to make it easier for passengers to get back their lost luggage. Regular drives & operations are being carried out in this direction. These operations are being carried out under the leadership of WR’s IG cum Principal Chief Security Commissioner, Praveen Chandra Sinha.

According to a press release issued by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, some passengers forget to take all their belongings in a rush to board the train or leave the station. Under Operation Amanat”, RPF personnel help in securing such belongings and restore them to the rightful owners.

In 2023 (up to May till date), under Operation ‘Amanat’, RPF has retrieved luggage in 1437 cases valued at about INR 3.16 Cr. Out of these, 838 bags, 53 purses, 12 laptops, 30 mobile phones, 14 gold chains and 160 other items worth INR 3,15,99,576/- were handed over to passengers.

The left-behind luggage was returned to the passengers after due verification. It is worthwhile to mention, that o­n May 24, 2023, RPF staff of Mumbai Division recovered lost luggage of approx. INR 1,79,500/- in 12 different cases at various stations and handed them over to their rightful owners.

Thakur further added that, Western Railway’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) work round the clock to provide a safe, secure and comfortable travel experience to the passengers. RPF has discharged the responsibility of protection of huge assets of railways spread far and wide across the country by taking preventive measures as well as measures for detection of crime against railway property.

Besides this, WR’s RPF made focused efforts to curb illegal incidences of Alarm Chain Pulling, which help in keeping train movements smooth and hassle-free under Operation Samay Palan. RPF has taken strict action against illegal chain pullers under Section 141 of Railway Act 1989 and realised fines from the offenders.

In 2022-23, Western Railway’s RPF detected 4459 cases of illegal Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP), arrested 4425 persons and realised fines amounting INR 22,43,465/-. For smooth train operations, 1949 awareness programs were organised in FY 2022-23 by RPF in punctuality affected areas/sections to sensitize passengers and to minimise ACP cases.

There have been an approx. 48% increase in the arrests of miscreants causing disruption and 60% increase in fines realised in comparison to previous year. Western Railway’s RPF are the sentinels o­n the rail and are committed to keep the railways safe.
