Western Railway’s (WR) Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are always at the forefront to protect and secure the lives of passengers. RPF WR has launched Operation Yatri Suraksha under which the railway police catches criminals involved in passenger-related crimes such as theft and robbery & the accused are handed over to GRP for further legal action.

WR’s RPF personnel apprehended 460 persons involved in passenger theft cases with the help of CCTV surveillance cameras for the period from January to July 20, 2023.

According to a press release issued by Sumit Thakur – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, RPF has made a special effort in containing the menace of theft of passenger belongings both in suburban and long-distance trains with the help of crime intelligence. Giving impetus to Operation Yatri Suraksha, Western Railway has installed 3897 CCTV cameras including 488 cameras with inbuilt Facial Recognition System (FRS) which contains details of criminals along with their photos which are uploaded in the system to curb crimes against passengers. From January 2023 to July 2023, WR’s RPF has arrested 460 persons involved in cases of crime against passengers, including the recent five cases in which the accused were apprehended in just two days.  

Giving further details, Thakur informed that o­n July 20, 2023, the Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) at Andheri Post apprehended an accused named Karim Shakir Shah (aged 42 yrs) after reviewing the CCTV footage.

The offender admitted to stealing mobile phone valued at Rs. 8,500 and during questioning, he also revealed his involvement in three other such cases at various locations. In yet another case o­n the same day, the CPDS team apprehended another culprit named Sharufddin Shumshu Sayyed (aged 25 yrs) through the CCTV footages. The offender admitted to stealing the mobile phone valued at INR 20,000. During further questioning, he revealed his involvement in five other cases of IPC and NDPS Act registered at Andheri and DN Nagar Police Station.

On July 20, 2023, the CPDS team of Palghar Post apprehended a thief red-handed while attempting to pick pocket a passenger. The accused named Vijay Sukur Pawar (aged 27 yrs) was caught stealing items worth Rs. 13,300. The suspect admitted his involvement in another theft of a mobile valued at INR 16,000 (of IPC registered at GRP/Palghar). Similarly, o­n July 19, 2023, the CPDS team of Surat Post also caught an accused named Zabir Satar Shaikh (aged 20 yrs) red-handed trying to steal a mobile phone valued at INR 14,000. The offender has been handed over to GRP/Surat for further legal action.

The RPF personnel posted at Surendranagar station of Rajkot Division, apprehended & detained a thief named Vishvanath Singh (aged 23 yrs). During interrogation, the offender confessed to stealing two mobile phones worth INR 32,500 and INR 4,000 in cash. He was then handed over to GRP/Rajkot for further legal action.
