In what comes as good news for those at home, the cost of non-subsidized LPG cylinders in Mumbai has been cut by Rs 135.5. This means a new LPG cylinder will now cost Rs 579 while citizens previously had to shell out Rs 714.50. The prices are applicable to the 14.2 kg LPG cylinders used at homes across the country. This comes as LPG prices saw a hike in January this year.

The cost of LPG cylinders has also seen a reduction in other parts of the country. In cities like Kolkata and Chennai, LPG cylinders are now cheaper by Rs 190 or more. The cost of 19 Kg commercial cylinders has also fallen by Rs 256.5, which means it costs Rs 978 as of right now.

This is a crucial moment for the country as it is the highest ever reduction in non-subsidized cooking gas prices. The price reductions were announced in a notification by state-owned oil companies.

This is likely the consequence of falling demand for crude and gas as more people stay indoors amidst the lockdown. However, the fall was predicted given that it has been a developing trend over the past three months.

In India, households are liable to get 12 LPG cylinders at subsidized per year.  Citizens can buy additional cylinders after their quota is exhausted, but by paying more for non-subsidized cylinders. The price reduction will come as welcome news for families frustrated with the lack of income and rising costs.
