Over 1.07 crore investors in Maharashtra have been cheated of INR 3.18 lakh crore in the last 10 years. This was revealed by the Maharashtra Home Department during the monsoon session of the state legislature.

The information was shared in a written reply to Congress MLC Satej Patil, who raised concerns about the growing number of economic and cyber frauds in the state. The figures were given in response to questions raised by both ruling and opposition lawmakers on cyber frauds and fake investment plans.

According to the written reply, in Mumbai alone, about 2.71 lakh investors were defrauded of INR 2.95 lakh crore. This data was shared by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Mumbai.

Around 1.05 crore investors outside Mumbai lost INR 22,552 crore.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that 46,321 cybercrime complaints were registered in Maharashtra between 2016 and May 2025. The total amount lost in these cases is INR 11,033.97 crore.

In 2024 alone, 58,157 financial fraud complaints were received through the Maharashtra National Cyber Crime Reporting system. These include 12,582 complaints from Thane, 13,971 from Pune, and 31,583 from Mumbai. The amount lost in these cases is around INR 1,186.46 crore.

To prevent such crimes, the state Home Department has set up Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) in every police commissionerate, district SP office, and under the Mumbai Police. These units will take preventive action against schemes that try to cheat investors.
