Cases have been registered against 22 people for drunk driving at various police stations in Mumbai. The official informed that 20 cases have been registered in the city in this regard. Mumbai Police was ordered to immediately file a case if a driver is found driving under the influence of alcohol. This action has been taken after that. The police will recommend cancellation of the concerned driver's license and seizure of the vehicle.


Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare had informed that orders have been given to register cases directly against drunk drivers. Apart from this, the police will immediately recommend to the RTO department to cancel the driving license of the concerned person and seize the vehicle. Giving information about this, the officer said that if a case is registered against any person, he may face difficulties in obtaining a passport and traveling abroad in the future. The order in this regard was issued by Joint Commissioner of Police Kumbhare. 


Mumbai Police has since registered 20 cases against the drunk drivers. A total of 22 people have been charged in the case. Three people have been charged in one of the cases, the official said. Cases have been registered in various police stations in the city including Parksite and Powai. Earlier, punitive action was taken against the persons concerned. Fines were imposed on the persons concerned on the orders of the court.

Action against drunk drivers increased

The Traffic Control Branch is taking action against drivers who violate traffic rules. Regular action is being taken against drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol through roadblocks and special campaigns. In 2023, action was taken against 2,562 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol under Section 185 of the IPC, and in 2024, action was taken against a total of 9,462 drivers.


Under which law are crimes registered? 

In order to discipline vehicle drivers and prevent accidents from endangering the lives of citizens, it is now necessary to register cognizable crimes under the Indian Penal Code 2023 in the police station to effectively implement action against drunk drivers. In order to prevent drivers who endanger the lives of the general public by driving recklessly, dangerously and negligently under the influence of alcohol and to ensure the fear of law, orders have been issued to register cases at the local police station under Section 125 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023. 


Also, Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act and other related sections are being imposed depending on the nature of the crime. After that, instructions have been given to cancel the driving license and initiate the process of confiscating the vehicle. After a cognizable case is registered against a drunk driver, his name will be registered with the police as an accused. This may create problems for the person concerned regarding facilities like passport, foreign travel, etc., the official said.
