Mumbai: 24-year-old waiter held for allegedly killing a toddler

The waiter kidnapped and killed a 10-month-old girl in Goregoan after some dispute which took place few days before the crime with the victim's parents.

Mumbai Police have arrested a 24-year-old waiter for allegedly kidnapping and strangling a 10-year-old girl.

According to the reports, the accused had committed the crime over some dispute that took place a few days ago with the infant's family. 

The accused worked as a waiter in a hotel located near the crime scene. The victim lived on a pavement at Aarey Road in Goregoan, and her family sold garlands, flowers, balloons, and plastic garbage bags from there.

As per the police officer, the victim's mother, Neeta, woke up in the middle of the night and found her daughter missing. Narrating the incident to Mid-day, she said that when she woke up late at night, she witnessed someone pulling sheets from her daughter. She got terrified when she saw a person sitting nearby. She woke up the victim's father, identified as Deepak Vagri, but the man started running away immediately. They tried chasing the man; however, he ran into the bushes.

When they came, all of their belongings were scattered, and their toddler was missing. They searched for her everywhere but couldn't find her following which the couple approached the Goregoan police to file a complaint.

Goregoan police formed several teams to find the accused, and after examining the CCTV footage, they saw a man carrying the girl towards the Shaukat compound, which is few metres away from where the victims' family lived. Police searched over there and found the body of the girl. Later, they arrested the accused, who confessed that he had committed the crime. 

The waiter, as per media reports, said that the victim's parents would allegedly harass customers at the hotel and beg. However, the deceased's mother denied the allegations.

The officers said that they have sent the body to JJ Hospital for post mortem. They have arrested the accused and registered a case of kidnapping under Section 363  and Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
