In a tragic incident, Western Railway (WR) lost three of its staff members while they were performing their duties. The three men had gone to address some issues at a signalling point on the evening of January 22. At 10.55 pm, they were run over by a local train going from the UP slow line between Vasai Road and Naigaon, resulting in their instant death.

The deceased were identified as Sachin Wankhade, an assistant, Somnath Uttam Lambutre, who was an electrical signalling maintainer on Vasai Road and Vasu Mitra, the chief signalling inspector at Bhayander. All three were from the Mumbai Central division of WR's Signalling Department.

Railways has ordered an investigation to find out the reason behind the incident. The families of the deceased employees will also receive GIS, DCRG, leave encashment, and other settlement dues. The processing of these settlement dues is currently underway.

In response, the Indian Railways S&T Union (IRSTMU) mourned the deaths of three men on Twitter. Furthermore, it demanded a risk and hardship allowance for the signal and telecom (S&T) workers.

Senior railway authorities, including the Divisional Railway Manager, arrived at the scene and pledged all possible support to the bereaved families. Immediate relief of INR 55,000 was provided to each family.

In addition to the immediate relief, the families of the deceased will receive a larger amount and an ex gratia payment in 15 days. Vasu Mitra's family is expected to receive approximately INR 1.24 crore. While the families of Sachin Wankhede and Somnath will get approximately INR 40 lakh.
