A 45-year-old man has been detained by the Mumbai police in Chembur, in connection with the alleged rape of a 38-year-old woman.

The accused has been identified as Ganesh Jayakumar Verma. The case was reported to the RCF police station, where Verma is now facing charges.

According to a source quoted by PTI, the accused visited the woman's house under the pretext of discussing payment for her teaching. However, on the night of May 13, when the woman was alone at home, he sexually assaulted her. The victim also claimed that Verma had harassed her on April 28 too. Verma also tried to coerce her into travelling to Navi Mumbai, but she refused. It is further alleged that the accused engaged in unnatural intercourse before leaving the scene.

However, the woman reported the incident four days later. The victim, who works as a teacher, filed a complaint with the police. This led to an investigation into the incident. Verma had switched off his phone and frequently changing his location.

On May 21, the police finally arrested Verma. He was then presented before a municipal court, where he was granted police custody. An FIR has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
