In a recent development, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken action against suspected rule violations along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. The authority has issued notices to 62 petrol pumps situated along the route.

The NHAI's concern comes from the condition of the roads leading to these petrol stations. The authority said that it is important to maintain these roads to reduce accidents.

Petrol station owners from Kashimira to the Gujarat border have been warned that failure to maintain the access roads could lead to the cancellation of their licenses. The authorities have expressed concerns about the small and unpaved condition of these roads, especially during the rainy season.

During an inspection, the authorities found encroachments on both sides of the highway, from Shirsad Phata to Versova Bridge. Notices have also been issued to hotel owners who have erected unlawful structures.

Non-compliant operators would face action after another reminder. According to reports, there are plans to build three vehicular underpasses (VUPs) and ten-foot overbridges (FOBs) at accident-prone locations.

According to 2023 data, there were numerous accidents in the Vasai Virar and Mira Bhayander regions and the Palghar district. The records also showed that the stretch from Dahisar to Talasari had 17 black spots.

The NHAI has plans for long-term solutions for these black spots. In the meantime, about 400 new lampposts will be installed in dark spots. New road markings will be installed along the entire stretch. It has been suggested that the state government implement the ATMS (advanced traffic management system) for this section.

Since December 2023, the NHAI has been working on a project to convert the 121-km, six-lane bituminous carriageway on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway to white topping. The project will cost INR 620 crore and is funded by the central government.
