9 kg gold seized in last 4 days at Mumbai Airport

Twelve Indian nationals travelling from Dubai (04), Abu Dhabi (03), Jeddah (02), Bahrain (01), Kuwait (01), and Jakarta (01) were intercepted and found to be carrying 6627 grams gold concealed in rectum, on body and inside undergarments.

In the period between April 15-18, 2024, Airport Commissionerate, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, seized over 9.482 Kg Gold valued at INR 5.71 Crore in 14 different cases at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Gold was found concealed on the body of the pax, in the rectum, in the hand baggage of pax and inside the specially designed packets in undergarments worn by the pax. Eight people were arrested in all.

In four different cases, foreign nationals travelling from Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Paris to Mumbai were intercepted and found carrying 22KT gold melted bars and 22KT crude jewellery collectively weighing 1681 grams which were found to be concealed inside the undergarments and on the body.

In an interesting case, two Indian Nationals were intercepted smuggling the gold concealed in undergarments with the help of an airport contractual staff in transit area. Total 1174 grams of gold dust was recovered. All three of them were arrested. This information has been provide by Mumbai Airport Customs Zone-III.
