Yash Builders developer Paras Sundarji Dedhia was arrested from the High Court premises on Monday and sentenced to three months simple imprisonment for contempt of court order. Dedhia was taken to Arthur Road Jail after his arrest.

On December 22, 2023, the court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Dedhia in a contempt case for defrauding several people in redevelopment projects in Chembur and Govandi. As Dedhia did not appear despite repeated summons and bailable warrants, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Dedhia did not comply with the written assurance given to the court. Therefore, a contempt petition was filed against him.

Property owner Dilip Gawand entered into an agreement with Dedhia's company in 2014 to redevelop the property in Chembur. Accordingly, two projects Yash Heights and Yash Signature were proposed. The buildings were also demolished after the residents vacated the premises. Gawand was to get two flats of 805 square feet in Yash Signature. But after the developer failed to complete the project and hand over possession, Gawand approached the High Court in 2017. At that time Dedhia had given the court a written undertaking to comply with the terms, but it was not followed. Gawand died on May 11, 2020. The suit filed by him was carried forward by his wife and son.

Cause of action…

During the hearing on the matter on Monday, the court was told that Dedhia had been avoiding arrest till late Sunday night and had also switched off his mobile phone. This time Dedhia appeared in court. Even when the police system was taking action, Dedhia deliberately tried to avoid arrest.

Moreover, breached the assurances given to the court and avoided attending the court. But they have not apologized or explained the breach of warranty. Therefore, observing that it is necessary to stop this action of Dedhia, the court ordered his arrest. Also sentenced to simple imprisonment of three months in contempt case.
