In a major breakthrough in the investigation of NCP leader Baba Siddique's murder, a 22-year-old suspect was apprehended near the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Pacca Chisti village. The suspect, identified as Akashdeep Karajsingh Gill, is a resident of Fazilka Tehsil in Punjab and is believed to be linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Gill’s arrest was the result of a coordinated operation between the Mumbai Police and Punjab Police, showcasing strong inter-state cooperation. This arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in the case to 24.
Suspect and Gang Connections
Authorities allege that Akashdeep Gill acted as a critical link in the murder plot. Investigators believe he was in regular contact with Anmol Bishnoi, a key figure in the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and passed instructions from Bishnoi to the shooters involved in the crime. Gill’s role is suspected to have been logistical, providing crucial support for the execution of the assassination. The Punjab Police announced the arrest in an official statement, emphasizing the significance of the operation. According to the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), the accused had been actively aiding the shooters who carried out the killing. The statement further highlighted the seamless coordination between Punjab Police and Maharashtra Police, underlining their commitment to public safety and justice.
Interrogation and Follow-Up
Gill’s arrest follows revelations obtained during the questioning of previously detained suspects. Acting on the new intelligence, a team of officers traveled to Punjab and arrested Gill in Fazilka Tehsil. The suspect was presented before a local court in Punjab and has since been transferred to Mumbai on a transit remand. Officials have confirmed that Gill will be presented in a Mumbai court for further legal proceedings. The case dates back to October 12, when 66-year-old NCP leader Baba Siddique was shot dead near his son MLA Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Bandra. The attack, carried out by three assailants, shocked the local community. According to reports, the lead shooter, Shiv Kumar Gautam, remained at the scene for nearly 20 minutes after the crime.
Legal Proceedings
The Mumbai Crime Branch registered the case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, and the MPA Act. Initially handled by the Nirmal Nagar Police Station, the case was later transferred to the Crime Branch, which is now working closely with Punjab’s AGTF to ensure all suspects are brought to justice. This arrest highlights the effectiveness of inter-state law enforcement collaboration in tackling organized crime. The joint operation between Mumbai and Punjab Police has been lauded as a testament to their unwavering commitment to public safety and justice. Authorities are determined to resolve the case fully and ensure accountability for those involved.
