In a significant development in the Mokhada murder case, law enforcement authorities have finally made headway, cracking the case 41 days after the gruesome discovery of a headless woman's body beneath a bridge. The breakthrough comes with the arrest of two suspects, shedding light on the harrowing incident that had baffled investigators for over a month.
Identification of the Victim
The victim, identified as Mamata Lalsingh Pavara, aged 35 and a resident of Lakade Hanuman hamlet in Shirur taluka, was recognized through meticulous examination of a tattoo adorning her right arm and distinct markings on her toe rings. A Hindustan Times report mentioned that despite this identification, the whereabouts of the victim's head remain unknown, adding a layer of mystery to the case. Following intensive investigations, authorities apprehended Sunil alias Govind Yadav, aged 45, from Kencha in Maharajganj Taluka, Uttar Pradesh, and his accomplice Mahesh Badgujar, aged 31, residing in Shirpur taluka. The arrest of these individuals marks a crucial turning point in the pursuit of justice for the victim and her family.

The tragic incident unfolded on February 7, when the decapitated body of an unidentified woman in her mid-30s was discovered beneath a bridge along the Vaitarna River on Khodala–Kasara Road. Prompt action by local residents led to the retrieval of the remains, which were subsequently subjected to thorough post-mortem examination. Despite concerted efforts by law enforcement agencies, the task of identifying the victim and unraveling the circumstances surrounding her death posed significant challenges. The absence of concrete leads initially hindered progress, prompting authorities to widen their search across Palghar district and adjoining areas, as well as metropolitan regions like Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan.
Breakthrough Through Collaborative Efforts
A breakthrough in the case came through collaborative efforts involving meticulous examination of the victim's toe rings, which bore the hallmark of a manufacturer associated with women from a scheduled tribe community known as Pavra in Shirpur taluka. Subsequent scrutiny of electoral rolls and coordinated efforts among Police Patils from the region culminated in the positive identification of the victim. During interrogation, the arrested suspects divulged chilling details of the events leading up to the victim's demise. The perpetrators confessed to luring Mamata under the pretext of a trip to Lonawala, where she was subsequently strangled in Badgujar's car before being beheaded and her body disposed of under the bridge near Karegaon along the Vaitarna River.
Acknowledgment and Legal Proceedings
Balasaheb Patil, superintendent of police, Palghar, commended the diligent efforts of the investigative team, particularly Deputy Superintendent of Police Ganpat Pingle and Anil Vibhute, head of the local crime branch, for their instrumental role in cracking the case. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges of murder and causing disappearance of evidence.
