The District Coordination Committee (DCC) in the city has taken a firm stand against tobacco advertising. They have asked the Mumbai police to act against anyone found promoting cigarettes and tobacco products.

This move comes after the second meeting of the DCC for the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). The meeting, which was held last week saw various stakeholders come together.

Dr. Jayshree Saraswat, the district NTCP programme manager, led the meeting. Representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), health department, district administration, education department, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were there too.

The meeting also reviewed the proper execution of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003. The act has provisions that ban such advertisements.

The agency has asked the FDA to implement measures. The police department has also been tasked with enforcing Section 5 of the COTPA 2003. This is because of the rampant increase in tobacco and cigarette advertising in the district.

The education department has been asked to make students aware of the negative consequences of tobacco use. They will make sure that no such products are sold in the school or its 100-yard vicinity.

NGOs involved in the NTCP have been tasked with making people aware of the negative effects of tobacco consumption.
