The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has foiled a gold smuggling attempt at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai. The DRI officers had received specific information that travellers from UAE to Mumbai were smuggling gold in paste form into India. The DRI team set up surveillance at the airport and located the suspected passengers in three flights arriving at Mumbai airport.

Upon investigating, the officials found that 18 Sudanese women and 1 Indian national were attempting to smuggle 16.36 kg of gold worth INR 10.16 crores. Most of the seized gold was hidden in the bodies of the smugglers in the form of paste, bits, and jewellery.

This made it difficult for DRI officials in locating the gold, but a follow-up search at connected locations led to the discovery of 1.42 kg of gold worth INR 85 lakh, INR 16 lakh in foreign currency, and INR 88 lakh in Indian currency.

The officials are conducting additional investigations to identify every member of the syndicate responsible for the illegal gold imports. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are taking strict measures to prevent such smuggling attempts in the future.
