Mumbai - In yet another seizure, the Aiport Intelligence Unit intercepted a passenger with contraband gold. During the intervening night duty of 10/ 11.02.2017, a passenger named Vimlesh Panchal holding Indian passport no. Z3639523 arrived from Bangkok by flight # 9W 67 was intercepted.

On examination, he was found carrying gold chain, gold bracelet and other gold ornaments weighing 350 grams valued at Rs. 8,84,618/- . The said passenger had attempted to clear the goods by availing the facility of the green channel without paying appropriate customs duty. A case has been booked.
Further, on the basis of information received and prompt persuasion by the AIU officers, unclaimed seizure of 18 gold bars of 10 tolas each totally weighing 2,098 grams valued at Rs. 54,67,924/- was made from Air India flight # AI 984 arrived from Dubai. A case has been booked and investigation as to who brought the said gold into India and the involvement of connected people has been undertaken.

The said gold was cleverly and neatly packed in strings in ladies stocking & kept in the hollow pipe beneath one passenger seat. In flights, there would be a hollow pipe which supports seats. The window side of the pipe is usually open and gold biscuits are kept in that for the next passenger to locate and retrieve.
