Locals from Dharavi demand proper investigation in kabaddi player’s murder case

The alleged murder of a 26-year-old Kabbadi Player, Vimal Nadar, from Dharavi has caused a stir in the locality and the actions taken by the police have not satisfed the locals. As per reports, over 400 people from his family and neighbours staged a protest outside the Dharavi police station on Sunday, July 24, 2022. As per reports, a suspect, 32-year-old Mallesh has been arrested by the police and the CCTV footage of the crime scene has been received by the officials.

Meanwhile, members from Nadar's family have mentioned that another person was involved in the murder as well. However, the details regarding him were not mentioned in the investigation and the family wants the police to arrest the person as well. A report regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times which mentioned that the custody of the body has been refused by the family who have also pressurised the police to arrest other suspects. 

Post mounting the pressure, officials have arrested two other suspects under the section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It is said that a 30 and 20-year-old suspect have been taken under custody keeping family's demands in mind.

Quoting a distant relative of the deceased, the report stated, "The deputy commissioner of police Pranay Ashok and assistant commissioner of police convinced the deceased’s family that they will arrest the accused involved in the case. The family then agreed to accept the body for his last rites.”

The complaint file by the police mentions that the incident occurred early in the morning at the 3:20 am on Saturday, July 23, 2022, when the accused were consuming alcohol near Nadar's house. Upon sensing the noise and nuisance created by the accused, Nadar confronted at them and raised questions regarding to consuming alcohol and creating the noise, which eventually led to a heated arguement. Nadar was a resident of a chawl located in Dharavi, which is present a few metres away from the Dharavi police station. 

One of the accused allegedly hit Nadar with the stumps and the other three assaulted him with bamboo sticks, post which the neighbours gathered and found him on the street with injuries. He was rushed to the Sion Hospital and was declared dead.

Officers also mentioned that Nadar and the accused have had enmity in the past regarding smaller matters. Post understanding the murder, a case was filed under the section 302 of IPC, and the main accused was also arrested from the vicinity in a few hours after the incident.

Locals mentioned that Nadar was a well known Kabbadi player in the area and also worked as technician. He survived by his father Vijay Nadar and other who also works in the Dharavi area.

Locals have gathered over the last two days, demanding justice for his death and have mentioned that they shall accept the body only post all the suspects are arrested and investigation is conducted in a proper manner. Some have mentioned that the murder was pre-planned on the previous animity and that the accused gathered and consumed alcohol they by creating nuisance on purpose.

Leaders from the locality also arrived at the location to calm down the locals and have mentioned the proper investigation will be conducted with regards to the case.
