With 55 new cases on Monday in Maharashtra Police, the total number of positive policemen has reached 1,328. In Mumbai alone, the number of infected policemen has crossed the 400-mark. Among the total positive cases, the majority of patients are constables. According to data, 1,192 policemen are constables whereas the remaining 136 persons are police officers. So far, 12 policemen have succumbed to the pandemic.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the policemen have been patrolling the streets to ensure that lockdown norms are not being flouted. This has put the police personnel at risk and especially, Mumbai Police officials have been affected the most. Policemen who have been posted at COVID-19 hotspots in the city such as Sahar Police station, Juhu Police station, Vakola Police station, Wadala Police station, J.J. Police station have tested positive.

As a precautionary measure, several police quarters have been sealed after policemen living there tested positive for COVID-19.

A major reason behind the spread of the infection among the police personnel is said to be the irresponsible behaviour displayed by the citizens. Despite repeated instructions to maintain social distancing, avoid crowding at markets, etc. people have failed to follow simple norms.

There have also been incidents of policemen being attacked by miscreants and accordingly, Maharashtra Police has taken action against 819 such persons in 240 cases. 84 policemen and a home guard have been reported to have sustained injuries throughout these instances.

According to reports, the Maharashtra Police has deployed around 23,000 police personnel, aged between 50 and 55, for low-risk police station tasks whereas around 12,000 policemen who are above the age of 55, have been asked to stay home.
