Tanveer Chaugule, a resident of Mumbra-Kausa, has been arrested by the Mumbra Police in connection with electricity theft. He was produced before the court on May 19 and remanded in judicial custody till June 1. 


Tanveer Chaugule, who lives in Dongre Nagar area of Kausa, has not paid his electricity bill since MSEDCL period. In August 2021, his electricity metre was removed by Torrent Power Company due to his electricity bill arrears. However, even after that he continued to steal electricity.

Due to non-payment of electricity bills, the electricity supply to his house was cut off, but still he connected the electricity many times by stealth. The electricity bill in Chowgule's two flats amounted to INR 2.96 lakhs and when the total electricity theft was assessed, it came to INR 5.01 lakhs. 


He had not stopped stealing electricity despite repeated warnings. Action was taken against him under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003. Electricity theft is a crime under the Act and the torrent company has warned of strict legal action against electricity thieves.
