Borivali Railway Police have registered a case 13 days after a youth attempted to forcefully enter the women’s compartment of the Virar-Dadar fast local train and hurled abuses at the passengers. The incident took place on September 11, and after footage went viral on social media, it sparked concerns about women’s safety on Mumbai’s suburban trains.
What Happened on September 11?
Swara Bhosale, a resident of Virar, boarded the 6 PM Virar-Dadar local from Virar station to travel to Andheri. She was seated in the first-class ladies’ compartment (Churchgate side), which was sparsely crowded.
After Mira Road station, a young man who had boarded the adjacent luggage compartment began peeking into the women’s coach and making obscene remarks. Alarmed, three women sitting near the window moved away. The man then began angrily banging on the roof of the coach, creating panic among the passengers.
Swara said the situation continued until Andheri station. Although she and other women tried calling the railway helpline, no help was received for nearly 15 minutes. “There were many women in the compartment, yet there was a sense of fear. If a woman had been travelling alone, anything could have happened,” Swara said.
The women recorded videos of the incident, which later surfaced on social media and drew public attention.
Case Registered
Swara filed a complaint 13 days after the incident. Based on her report and the viral footage, Borivali Railway Police registered a case against an unidentified accused under:
Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita – related to acts or gestures intended to insult a woman’s modesty or invade her privacy.
Section 145(b) of the Railway Act – for causing nuisance, obscene behavior, or using abusive language on railway premises.
“We are reviewing the CCTV footage and will arrest the accused soon,” said the Senior Police Inspector of Borivali Railway Police Station.
