In a major crackdown on mobile theft, Mumbai Police recovered 1,650 lost or stolen mobile phones worth an estimated Rs 2 crore from 19 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The operation stemmed from a state-wise review of complaints on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, which revealed a significant number of Mumbai-registered devices in the neighboring state. With approval from Commissioner of Police, Brihanmumbai, Deven Bharti, 13 specialized teams—comprising police officers and CEIR officials from each zone—were dispatched to Uttar Pradesh.
The coordinated effort successfully traced and retrieved the devices, marking a key achievement in curbing mobile theft and misuse.
A total of 33,514 lost or stolen mobiles linked to Mumbai have been recovered through CEIR initiatives and returned to their rightful owners.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis publicly praised the effort, sharing a post on X and congratulating Mumbai Police for their work. The message acknowledged the scale of the operation and its impact on citizens.
