Mumbai Police data revealed that 1,005 cases of child sex abuse and molestation were registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2023, till November. In the same period in 2022, as many as 1,051 cases of child sex abuse and molestation were registered.
In a first instances for 2024, on Sunday, January 7, Mumbai Police has registered six cases of sex abuse and molestation of children in the age group 4-16 years; however, accused in five cases were arrested.
Case 1: Sakinaka police arrested a 73-year-old man for allegedly exposing himself in front of a four-year-old girl early on Monday, January 8. The girl’s mother filed a complaint, based on which the arrest was made.
Case 2: Vanrai police in Goregaon area arrested a 21-year-old young man for allegedly stalking a 16-year-old girl and harassing her by making phone calls since January 2021. The accused is also facing a kidnapping case.
Case 3: On Monday, January 8, the Andheri police registered a case against an unidentified person who allegedly passed lewd comments on a 12-year-old girl on January 6 while she was going to school.
Case 4: Bangur Nagar police on Sunday, January 7, arrested a 30-year-old electrician who allegedly stalked and molested a 15-year-old girl. The accused had gone to the girl’s house days ago for some work. When the girl was out for some work on Saturday, January 6, the accused allegedly stalked and moletsed her. She informed her parents and an FIR was registered.
Case 5 & 6: In two POCSO cases filed by the Kalachowki police in Central Mumbai, a 60-year-old man was arrested for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old girl, while another 50-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.
