A Mumbai sessions court has rejected the bail plea of the driver accused in the fatal BEST bus accident in Bhandup, observing that the incident could have been prevented.

The court noted that the accused, Santosh Sawant, was aware of his lack of training to operate an electric bus but still chose to drive it. It stated that the accident, which claimed four lives, might have been avoided had he refused to take control of the vehicle.

Highlighting the seriousness of the case, the court observed that the driver did not possess adequate knowledge or skills to handle an electric bus, and therefore the offence cannot be treated as a routine accident.

The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, near Bhandup railway station, when the electric BEST bus allegedly lost control and rammed into pedestrians, killing four and injuring several others.

The court dismissed the defence argument regarding lack of training, stating that the driver should have declined to operate the bus under such circumstances.

The matter remains under investigation.
