Former Director-General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Param Bir Singh was appointed as the 43rd Commissioner of the Mumbai Police on Saturday.

While speaking to the media, the newly appointed Mumbai Police Commissioner, Singh said that his top priority will be curbing underworld crimes and women’s safety.

“I feel very honoured. I will continue to maintain law and order. Women’s safety, curbing street and underworld crimes would be my priority,” IPS officer Param Bir Singh said.

Singh, an IPS officer of 1988 batch, succeeded Sanjay Barve who retired on Friday. Earlier, there was speculation that Barve might get another extension. Sanjay Barve had got extensions on two occasions for three-month each as Mumbai Police Commissioner.

Barve, an IPS officer of 1987 batch, was given a grand farewell at Naigaon police station as outgoing Mumbai Police Commissioner. Sanjay Barve had taken charge as commissioner in February 2019.

During his tenure, Barve was given two extensions – one in August and another in November 2019.

Of all the major challenges, Param Bir Singh will have to ensure that there is no law and order problem in Mumbai given the recent violence in Delhi amid the ongoing anti-CAA protests.

In Mumbai too, the women have been protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) drawing inspiration from Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.

Talking about the same, Singh said that protesting is a democratic right but it should happen as per the law.
