On Wednesday (November 4), Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, was arrested by Mumbai Police. He has been arrested in connection with the death of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in Alibaug in 2018. Goswami was arrested from his house and later in the day sent into judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh responding to the police action has said that no one is above the law. He further mentioned that Maharashtra Police is working in accordance with the law.

53-year-old Anvay Naik was found dead at the first floor of his farmhouse at Kavir Village in Alibaug in 2018 and had left an alleged suicide note accusing Arnab Goswami. However, the case was closed and was only reopened after Naik’s daughter met the DIG and produced more evidence. This led to the DIG initiating an enquiry against police inspector Suresh Warade, who had handled the case, for closing it ‘without investigating thoroughly’.

Prakash Javadekar, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister, Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis condemned the action. Javadekar took to Twitter to condemn the arrest and termed this as 'attack on freedom of the press'. He said, "We condemn the attack on press freedom in Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this".

Fadnavis called the arrest undemocratic and brutal which reminded him of the Emergency era. Taking to Twitter, he has opined that India has always fought the forces that attempt to crush the voice of dissent and the country will do so even now. He further slammed Congress stating that their mindset of Emergency still exists.
