A shocking incident was noted in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri area, on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, where more than 100 dogs were poisoned, and a recent report published in the Times of India states that over 25 carcasses have been found in the city. Complaint has been filed with the Ratnagiri police department and authorities are investigating the matter.

Officials have informed that the postmortem is being carried out by a team of three veterinarians, and it is suspected that anti-termite powder was used to poison the dogs. One of the three veterinarians, Dr. Avinash Bhagwat, in an interaction with the TOI said that the poison is usually in the form of crystal, which once consumed, affects the animal’s body in merely 10 minutes, by leaving the animal in pain and eventually causing death.

It is suspected that a local politician could be involved in poisoning the dogs, however, no substantial evidence has been found and no official statement has been released by the police.

Animal activists have been investigating the matter as well and have stated that the government has failed at implementing canine population control program in the district, due to which the number of dogs has increased.

Moreover, they emphasized that such crimes should not be encouraged as it leads to more such incidents in the future, and hence the police need to act efficiently. Efforts have been made in the past to act on animal harassment in the district and work on releasing necessary funds for the sterilization programs.

Similar incident was reported in Ratnagiri in 2008 as well, where over 40 dogs were poisoned, he recollected.
