Rape cases in Mumbai have increased by 14 per cent. Mumbai police have registered 1,015 rape cases in the year 2019 while in 2018 the number of rape cases in the city was 889. 

According to crime data for 2019 released by Mumbai police on Wednesday, there has not been a significant increase in the number of cases registered with the city police. 

In 2018, Mumbai police registered 41,901 cases related to various offences while in 2019 the number has increased to 41,931 which is a 0.1 per cent increase. 

Of all, theft remains the most frequent crime in Mumbai. However, it has dropped by nearly six per cent as compared to the year 2018. 

As per a report published in Times of India (TOI), causing hurt has become a second most prevalent crime with 4,372 cases registered under the offence in 2019 followed by vehicle theft (2,693) and molestation (2,678).

The numbers in other serious offences have also increased. According to the data report, Molestation rose from 2,586 in 2018 to 2,678 in 2019 while extortion cases have increased to 253 from 228. However, the number of registered murder cases (165) has only increased by one case.

Mumbai Police’s rate of solving crime cases is around 69 per cent, as per the report. Of the total 41,932 cases, the city police have managed to solve 28,812 cases in 2019.
