In a commendable display of vigilance and effectiveness, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) operating under the Western Railway has successfully apprehended 121 individuals suspected of involvement in crimes against passengers during the months of January and February 2024. This accomplishment underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of railway travelers.
Utilizing advanced surveillance technology, particularly CCTV cameras strategically positioned at various railway stations, the RPF managed not only to identify suspects but also to recover stolen property estimated to be worth approximately ₹44 lakhs. This feat showcases the pivotal role that modern technology plays in combating criminal activities within railway premises, ultimately enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Strategic Measures Lead to Deterrence and Apprehension
The concerted efforts of the RPF, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, have yielded significant results in combating crimes against passengers. According to official reports, a total of 100 cases of such crimes were detected and the culprits apprehended within the entire jurisdiction of the Western Railway during the initial two months of the year. Remarkably, more than half of these cases were resolved within the Mumbai Central division alone, signaling the effectiveness of strategic surveillance measures implemented in high-traffic areas.
Sumit Thakur, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, highlighted the proactive stance taken by the RPF to contain the menace of theft of passenger belongings. Through Operation Yatri Suraksha, Western Railway has bolstered security measures by installing 3912 CCTV cameras, including 488 equipped with Facial Recognition System (FRS). This advanced technology aids in the swift identification and apprehension of criminals, contributing to the overall safety of railway passengers.
Recent Successes and Continued Vigilance
Recent successes in apprehending suspects involved in passenger-related crimes were also highlighted. One notable case involved the apprehension of a thief at Andheri station by the Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) team, facilitated by diligent monitoring of CCTV footage. The suspect, identified as Vinod Prem Chand Gupta, confessed to his involvement in four separate mobile theft cases at Andheri station. Legal action has been initiated against Gupta under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code.
Furthermore, the vigilant and alert RPF officials have consistently played a pivotal role in apprehending perpetrators of various passenger-related crimes, including theft and robbery. Their efforts have not only led to the apprehension of suspects but have also facilitated the recovery of stolen items such as mobile phones, cash, valuables, and important documents. Offenders are promptly handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further legal proceedings, ensuring accountability and justice.
