Politics has been heating up in the state for the last several months due to rising electricity bills. However, the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have taken an aggressive stance against the state's energy minister Nitin Raut for not fulfilling his promise to give concessions to the citizens in the inflated electricity bill during the lockdown.

It has come to light that MNS has lodged a complaint against Nitin Raut, Energy Secretary and BEST General Manager at Shivaji Park Police Station and other one at Samtanagar, Kandivali. Moreover, MNS Thane city president Ravindra More has also lodged a complaint at the Wagle Estate police station.

Under the leadership of MNS Mahim Assembly Division President Yashwant Killedar, MNS workers visited Shivaji Park Police Station and submitted a memorandum to the senior police inspector to lodge a complaint.

Several people including Bollywood celebrities too expressed shock over the electricity bill amounts that they received amid the lockdown. There was also a wave of anger among consumers.

For the last several months, MNS workers have been protesting across the state over the issue of exorbitant electricity bills. Earlier, MNS leaders had taken out a morcha on the work of the District Collector at Bandra in Mumbai and submitted a statement to the District Collector. Hundreds of MNS workers had taken to the streets in several major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik and Aurangabad demanding electricity bill waiver.

Besides, MNS president Raj Thackeray had met Governor Koshyari to discuss about the electricity bill issue. Before Diwali, Raut had hinted at a major relief to electricity consumers, however, he changed tack later and blamed the Centre for not clearing the state's dues on GST which could have enabled the government to extend relief. “However, in a way, the citizens were financially deceived. Hence, we decided to lodge a complaint,” said the party worker.
