A Mumbai sessions court on Thursday sentenced Vijesh Sanghvi to life imprisonment for the murder of 13-year old Adit Ranka in 2013.
Ranka was a son of South Mumbai-based diamond merchant. He was allegedly kidnapped by his cousin Himanshu (32) and his friend Vijesh Sanghvi for a ransom of INR 30 lakh after the duo were in debt after losing approximately INR 10 lakh in IPL betting.
The court fined Sanghvi INR 9 lakh and said it was to be paid to the victim's mother Chandrika Ranka.
According to Principal Sessions Judge SB Agrawal, Sanghvi's sentence should start after his two seven-year sentences are over. On the other hand, the Adit Ranka’s cousin, Himanshu has been acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence.
Himanshu had allegedly planned to kidnap his cousin and ask for ransom in May 2013 after he was in debt.
The child’s body was burnt after the kidnappers didn’t receive the money.
