62 Unauthorised Private Schools Shut In Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given time until June to remaining 210 city schools, which too have been deemed unauthorised, to obtain the required permission from the state government and obtain the status of self-financed school.

A total of 62 private schools have been shut down in Mumbai days ahead of given the deadline by the Maharashtra government to crackdown the unauthorised schools before the upcoming academic year.

To ensure no academic loss of the students, around 1,500 children from these schools were accommodated in nearby schools, following counselling of their parents who were unaware of the unauthorised status of the schools.

Palghar district has witnessed the highest number of school closures at 20 schools across Maharashtra, followed by Thane and Mumbai at 15 and 13 schools respectively.

However, after the crackdown, out of the 285 illegal schools identified in Mumbai, 13 obtained permission to run on self-finance basis, while 62 have been shut. Similarly, in Palghar district, out of 143 illegal schools, 20 have sought permission to run on a self-finance basis. In Thane, the 15 illegal schools have applied for permission to operate on a self-finance basis.

However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given time until June to remaining 210 city schools, which too have been deemed unauthorised, to obtain the required permission from the state government and obtain the status of self-financed school. Otherwise, they too will be closed and children will be adjusted at nearby schools.
