Aaditya Thackeray meets students from Afghanistan

Days after the hasty capture of Afghanistan’s capital city Kabul, by the Taliban, a delegation of students from the country met Aaditya Thackeray. Post the capture by the Taliban, horrible images and videos have been seen circulating on the internet. From people falling off the aeroplanes to Taliban fighters seen enjoying rides at the amusement park and later burning down the place, one has seen it all. 

As the situation in unfolding, many students from Afganistan that are studying in India, fear for their life. They are concerned about their stay in Maharashtra. Visas of some of the students that had come to India for studies is about to expire and there are also a few such students that want asylum in India.

In the wake of this crisis, a delegation of students from Afghanistan approached Tourism and Protocol Minister Aaditya Thackeray. The students met him on Tuesday and even sought his help in regards to the visa extension. 

Post the meeting, Thackeray assured them of all possible help. He also shared that they are all safe in Maharashtra. In regards to the visa extension, he said he will follow up the same with the union government. 

According to reports, there are around 4,000-4,500 students from Afghanistan that studying in different parts of the state. The majority of them are in the universities in Mumbai and Pune. 

Post this meeting at the Sahyadri guest house at Malabar Hill on Tuesday afternoon, Aaditya Thackeray also said, “There are several issues that have concerned the students from Afghanistan, who have come to Maharashtra for studies. They want to know how they can continue to stay here as the visas of some of them are about to expire as their graduation is about to complete while others have a few years in hand. They are concerned about their return. Some of them also want to take asylum in the country. I will convey all their concerns and requests to the Centre as the state government has limited jurisdiction in the matter of foreign affairs”.
