The IIT-Bombay has increased the fees by around 35 per cent for M Tech and PhD students for this academic year. The institute has been planning to hike the fees for postgraduate courses for quite some time.

If reports are to be believed, the fee hike structure was approved by the board of governors around three years ago. However, after deferring it for two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, now the institute has finally changed the fee structure of such courses.

As per the brochure, the academic fees quoted for M Tech programmes per semester for students seeking admissions this year is INR 55,400, which was around INR 40,250 in 2019-20. This is the non-concessional fee structure.

Meanwhile, for the concessional fee structure, the fees this year for the concessional group, which includes almost all M Tech students who get stipends from the institute, is INR 35,400, whereas, the concessional fee structure was at INR 20,250 in 2019-20.

Besides, it has come to light that this hike has not gone down well with many students as they are already dealing with the impact of the pandemic and inflation. Most students fall in the concessional group. Additionally, these students get around INR 12,000 per month as stipends for teaching and research assistantship.

Apart from this, fees at most older IITs are likely to see an increase this year.
