On Saturday, January 9, Maharashtra Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant stated that a decision with regards to reopening colleges with a 50 per cent capacity will be taken by January 20, 2021.

This announcement came amidst Samant holding a meeting with college principals and other stakeholders. Moreover, the ministry has initiated a review of the current status of colleges, availability of students, non-teaching staff, and hostels. Furthermore, he assured of initiating the recruitment procedure for several vacant posts of teaching staff at state-run and state-aided colleges.

Meanwhile, amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus, educationists believe that hybrid learning will be the way to move forward which basically is an amalgamation of online and offline learning.

Moreover, while most institutions await the SOPs, some colleges are trying to embrace the new way forward. Madhu Nair, former dean of commerce, Mumbai University, said “Even when institutes re-open, only 50 per cent of students may be willing to travel to colleges. This group can be split into two and called on alternate dates.”

On the other hand, the degree college teachers have suggested that the first-year examinations be postponed to end of January 2021, adding that that the university release an official circular as soon as possible. This comes in less than two weeks after the organisation, in their previous letter, claimed that several colleges have not managed to teach the mandatory 90 days before the examinations a result of the delay in admissions to first-year courses which earlier made it impossible to hold the examinations in the month of December.
