Bombay High Court recently squashed reservation for backward class category students in minority institutions after which Education Minister Vinod Tawde had assured the backward class students that they will approach the Supreme Court if necessary. As a result, admissions to first-year degree colleges with the state government have been put on hold on Thursday. Lakhs of students seeking admission in these colleges are thus, in a state of limbo.

If the SC order is in favour of the reservation, the admission process will be restarted, that is, from the first merit list. The degree colleges have been asked to wait for another 10 days for the same. The second merit list was, however, due on Friday. Due to the new development, there is no second list as of now.

The times are tough for students who were expecting their names in the second list. Many colleges like St. Xavier’s College and Wilson College are planning to accommodate all students in the first list and then have all reserved category students in the second list and fill that quota too.

School education minister Vinod Tawde informed that admissions to junior colleges will not be affected by the problem. The confusion among the degree college candidates has raised doubts among FYJC candidates as non-minority junior colleges do not include constitutional reservations.
