Maharashtra is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to support the growing number of electric vehicles across the state. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), BEST and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) are working on expanding charging facilities at various locations.
The MSRTC has installed 285 EV chargers at 45 locations across Maharashtra, while plans are underway to establish charging facilities at another 100 locations. The move is aimed at supporting the increasing use of electric buses and other electric vehicles.
The expansion of charging infrastructure is particularly important as the number of EVs on Maharashtra's roads continues to rise. Adequate charging facilities are expected to encourage more citizens and transport operators to shift from conventional fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.
The BEST undertaking is also developing charging infrastructure to support its growing fleet of electric buses in Mumbai. Charging facilities at bus depots and other strategic locations will help ensure smoother operations and reduce dependence on conventional fuels.
The RTO is also involved in strengthening the overall EV ecosystem, including facilitating the development of charging infrastructure. The coordinated efforts of transport agencies and civic authorities are expected to make EV charging more accessible across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
With more charging stations being planned, Maharashtra is seeking to build a stronger network that can meet the future demand for electric vehicles and support the state's transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
