The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to provide Apple iPads to all 237 corporators as part of an initiative to gradually make the civic body’s functioning paperless.

The move is aimed at reducing the use of paper for official documents, meeting agendas, proposals and other civic-related work. Corporators will be able to access documents and information digitally through the devices.

The initiative is expected to make the functioning of the civic administration more efficient while also reducing expenditure on printing and paper. Various BMC committees, including the Standing Committee, Education Committee and Improvement Committee, are also expected to benefit from the digital system.

The plan comes as the civic administration seeks to modernise its working processes and increase the use of digital technology. Providing tablets to elected representatives is expected to make it easier for them to access documents during meetings and carry out their official responsibilities.

The BMC’s move towards paperless functioning is also expected to reduce the volume of physical documents generated during civic meetings and administrative procedures.
